About the book
Ever cooked something with chickpeas or lentils? Ever wondered what’s in that dreamy sauce at the Indian restaurant, that you could pour on everythingand eat every day. Ever wondered why Indians love a bowl of simple soup, spiced veggies and flatbread? Or what to do with all that chickpea flour! You’ve got all those answers and more in this book. There are not enough words in English to describe each sauce, curry and dal in the book.
There is a scientific reason that Indian food feels insanely delicious to many. The spices and flavors that don’t necessarily feel complementary are often used to give the final dish a complex flavor profile. It is radical and mesmerizing! Get your pantry ready, use the spices for everyday meals or host a dinner to remember.
For Full table of contents see here.
For photos missing from the book, see this post here. Between the photos in the book and photos on this post, all recipes have photos!
Whether you are Vegan or not, Indian or not, and simply want to eat some delicious food, this book can find a home on your shelf.
- Chapters cover easy savory breakfasts, snacks and small plates which can all be meals too.
- There is a big chapter on dals. Once you start on Dals from my book, you will find yourself craving lentils for lunch and dinner.
- The main dishes chapter has flavors that are complex, deep and crowd pleasing and surprisingly not too difficult to cook up.
- Flatbreads are the carriers of Indian food and there are several options in the book including gluten-free and grain-free breads.
- Indian desserts are a delight with the balance of cardamom and saffron. There are vegan versions of Indian deserts that were previously deemed impossible.
Try your hand at dishes that you have tasted before like Gobi Mutter Masala, Masoor Dal Tadka, Palak Tofu, Chana Masala, Restaurant-Style Puffy Naan, Samosa, and Besan Ladoos. Then impress with Masala Lentils, Chickpea flour Pudla, Curried Green beans, Navratan Korma, and desserts like Gajar Halwa, Gulab Jamuns.
If you are an intermediate cook or generally familiar with Indian food, which you will be after trying a few of the above, you can get more adventurous with Dal Makhani, Kathi Rolls, Whole Roasted Cauliflower-Gobi Musallam, Madras Chile Masala, Balti sauce and desserts like Sandesh, and Rasmalai.
If you love the recipes on the blog, you will love Vegan Richa’s Indian Kitchen
- The book has 150 + recipes for everything from Breakfast, Appetizers, Small Plates, Vegetable Sides, One Pot Meals, Mains, Flat breads, and Desserts!
- With 90+ gorgeous photos! For photos missed in the book, see here.

- All the recipes fall into one of 3 categories, they already are gluten-free, they have gluten-free options, or have a gluten-free recipe for the same thing in the book (for eg. regular Naan and gluten-free Naan are listed as 2 different recipes.)
- Almost all recipes except two can be made soy-free. In general most are by default soy-free.
- Most recipes are also kid -approved as they were tested by my testers’ fabulous kids!
- There are Pressure Cooker Instructions with most Dals, Beans Recipes.
- This is the Only Vegan Indian Cookbook by a Vegan.
- Make innumerable variations of the recipes. Use one of the 3 veggie balls/koftas with any of the 20+ Main sauces, use vegetables or beans of choice with any of the sauces, use other lentils in the 25+ dals!
- Everything is savory except the dessert section.

What my Amazing testers are Saying. The book would not be possible without them!
Davi: ” I love the amazing variety. Some of the recipes are vegan versions of restaurant favorites, and some are for foods I have never heard of before, but quickly became favorites. The ingredients are accessible and the results are delicious.”
Ema: ” I absolutely love your recipes. They’re simple, healthy and full of flavor. My husband decided to go vegan right after I had my son in 2011 and Richa’s recipe for Tempeh Tikka Masala was what turned me on to tempeh. And I’m not the best cook around, but these come out like something you would get at a restaurant. Amazing!!!”
Mia: ” I love how easy the recipes are. They are so delicious and authentic in flavour, and while they seem like they might be complicated to make, they are Not! The dishes are restaurant quality. I am so excited about this book!”
Nicole: ” We live in a crazy small town and the closest Indian restaurant was two hours south with a whopping two vegetarian options before it closed down. Once we went vegan finding enjoyable meals at the local restaurants was difficult. I decided I’d better get creative or there was no way I’d be able to keep my family on board with the then new to us lifestyle. The I found Vegan Richa and a few other blogs and the rest was history. All the Indian dishes I loved had a vegan alternative and they were better than I remembered, not to mention so many new ones I’d never tried or heard of! Admittedly I was a little intimidated by the long ingredients lists but let me be the first to assure you, don’t be! The recipes are clearly written, super tasty, and surprisingly easy to throw together my nine and six year old daughters often help out! A nice bonus a lot of our omni friends and family request these recipes and don’t even ask “where is the real food?!” anymore.”
Katie: ” The recipes in the book are clearly a labour of love. I can only feel thankful that Richa decided to veganize and share with us her amazing Indian cooking. Each recipe is as unique as it is delicious, and deceivingly simple. An open canvas for exploration, your kitchen will become your transportation to the rich food history of India.”
Jenn: ” Richa’s recipes are full of flavor and variety, yet easy enough for the home cook. Most of them cook up quickly (even with three little sets of hands tugging at me all the time!). Most of the ingredients are pantry staples in our house already. You will not be disappointed with this book! ”
Lisa: ” I love the variety of Richa’s dishes, and the authentic flavors. The recipes might seem intimidating, but that’s just because there are many spices – once everything is assembled, they are a breeze to prepare. It’s wonderful to have veganized versions of restaurant favorites, as well as some that are totally new! ”
Shannon: ” One of my favorite things about your recipes is your skill with spices. In the past when I’ve made Indian-inspired dishes at home they tasted good, but nothing like “real” Indian food. When I started cooking your recipes we both felt that we were eating restaurant-quality food. Even though I rarely have to buy a new ingredient for a recipe that I don’t already keep in my pantry, I have gotten to taste so many different and exciting flavors”
Kyleigh: ” I’m so excited for you! This is really an amazing collection of recipes, every single one I tested was good. Your flavor profiles, spice combinations and textures are always dead on. I have two other Vegan Indian cook books and they really just don’t compare either in flavor or ease. I can’t wait to see it in print! ”

Hi, I love your recipes/cookbooks and have both of them and can’t wait to preorder the new instant pot one. I noticed that the vegan Indian kitchen does not have nutritional information listed. Would you happen to have that information for all the recipes in that book?
Thanks!
Richa
No it doesn’t have nutritional info. We didn’t do the calculations as it wasn’t in demand at the time of publishing. You can use free tools like chronometer to calculate. Many of the recipes or similar ones are also on the blog so you can use those values as well
Maratia
Hi there, is there any way the English version of your cookbooks can be made available on apple books in New Zealand? I would really like to purchase a digital copy there but it says the book is not made available for my country (and only the German version can be purchased). The book looks great- can’t wait to try the recipes from it!
Richa
You can get it in kindle. It’s available on Apple Books in the US.

Hello from France Richa
Is there a French translation of your books?
It would be so good!
Richa
The translations depend on interest by publishers in the native language countries. So if there are enough sales of the english version, some publisher there who can do translations usually asks for rights to translate from my US publisher. Currently, this book has Spanish, german, Polish and Portuguese translations.

After learning I have a peppercorn intolerance, I’ve made to making my own “Garam Masalmost” with only slight modifications to your recipe. I’ve cooked at least 10 dishes from this, and each one has been a big hit.
Here’s a question for you, though. I can exhaust myself by comparing the multitude of spice grinders, but is there one you enjoy best? I’ve been using a hand-crank burr coffee grinder, and it can be quite the exercise.
Thanks!
Richa
I use Nutribullet. It has a grinder blade that works perfectly. It also saves some washing, because you can use the same blender jar attachment to blend the sauce if the recipe calls for it (with the other blending blade) and wash just 1 jar and blade.
Morgane
Dear Richa
It looks like like your book are not distributed in France right ?
Such a pity …. I love your blog !
Greetings from France
Richa

Uma
Hi Richa! I love your recipes that suit my family that needs to use onion-free, garlic free, dairy free, meat free cooking for the various members! I’m glad to find an Indian recipe site for vegans, so Thank you!
Richa
Thank you Uma! I am so glad the recipes help!
Jessica
Oh My Goodness! I cannot wait to go buy this book! I LOVE your recipies. We tried the Bombay Potatoes and Peas last night… I have renamed them Deconstructed Samosas (we had it with fried naan bread). I can’t tell you how much we enjoyed it!
Richa
Awesome! Thanks!
Anne Marie
I live overseas, am just 3 months into wfpb lifestyle, and I allowed myself to order one nice cookbook to supplement the fabulous vegan blogs around. I am so glad I chose yours. Indian cooking in the past was too time-consuming, but this is not only wfpb but not requiring hours and hours in the kitchen (I think of the few times before tha I tried malai kofta).
Last night I made the Palak Tofu for dinner (and breakfast 😉 and I also made another batch of the Tofu in Velvety Pepita Poppy Seed Sauce –am going to see if I can freeze it. I think if I can have a luscious curry and some rice, that’s all I need! Thanks for the beautiful book.
Richa
Thats Awesome Anne. So glad everything is turning out well and quickly. i make just the sauces sometimes to keep for the week and add veggies, tofu or chickpeas to it and serve with rice or flatbread.
Kari
Hey. I have your book, which I love. Everything we make of yours, we love. We just made the kofta balls in nut free cream sauce and SUPRISE we loved it.
I do have a question though. At one of our favorite restaurants there is a dish called Shahi Paneer Takatak: “Authentic homemade paneer cooked in our fragrant thick butter sauce with light herbs & spices.”
Do you have a vegan version of that kind of recipe? Or, what would be close to it in the book? It’s really the spices that make the dish. We can recreate the creaminess, but not that specific flavor.
Richa
It is somewhat of a cross between pav bhaji (mashed veggies with pav bhaji spice blend in the book), and tikka masala. Try this recipe (link below) with non dairy yogurt. Add more onion and tomatoes for saucier results. https://enjoyindianfood.blogspot.com/2014/11/paneer-and-vegetables-taka-tak.html
Kari
Thank you so much! I will give it a try.
Siubhan
This is the best cookbook ever! Every dish I have tried has turned out beautifully. The recipes are laid out very clearly and easy to follow. The spice combinations are delicious. I am going to cook my way through evey page of this book. My husband and son love everything too! Thank you so much.
Richa
Yay! I am so glad everything is turning out well and you are loving it!!
Nhi
Dear Richa,
Thank you for your recipes. I am in China. How could I buy this book? Please show me the instruction.
Thank you.
Richa
The book should be available on amazon.cn and book.dangdang.com, but I don’t see it. I will check with my publisher.
Nhi
Thank you Richa,
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Tally
I am so glad I got this cookbook. After stocking up on the basic spices needed to cook Indian food, I’ve been cooking 3 or 4 recipes a week from this book….all delicious! And getting easier and easier. Super healthy and really don’t miss the meat, etc., because of the full flavor of these recipes. (But if you want, you can easily add different proteins instead of tofu or tempha.) Highly, highly recommend!!
Richa
Thank you Tally. I am so happy you are enjoying the book and the meals!!
TR
Hi Richa,
Seems I’m late to the party but many many congratulations on the book.
I bought it on a whim and coz it looked nice????But the recipes really work????????????
Just one quick question- I’m not vegan, I love my paneer???? So how do I make sandesh or rasmalai? I was hoping you can post a cheat sheet for those of us who still eat dairy????????plzzzzzz????
Thank you and much love,
TR
Richa
Thank you Trisha! I am so glad you bought the book and the love the recipes!! You should definitely try my versions of sandesh and rasmalai from the book. 🙂
I am vegan for ethical reasons. i.e. I do not support killing of baby calves for using their milk (which is how we get dairy. more than 1 million calves get killed in the US per year and 10 million per year in India, that is 1 every 8 seconds). So I can only offer you the vegan recipes.
Karen
Made the Navratan Korma (royal sauce version) accompanied by the Gobi Musallam last night. Unbelievably beautiful, delicious, and satisfying. My husband and I are new to real Indian cooking so this cookbook (plus the blog) are opening up a new world of vegan food just like Vegan with a Vengeance did in 2007. Keep publishing, and thanks!
Richa
awesome!! Thank you for getting the book and loving the recipes and for the wonderful compliment!
Jennifer
I’ve had the book since I went Vegan in May 2015 and love love love it. Have made several of the recipes over and over and enjoy just reading it. Would like to know, though, what is the dish on the left on the cover? I’m sure you mention it in the book but I can’t find it.
Richa
thats Awesome Jennifer. The dish on the cover is lentil rice pulao from the one pot chapter. The cover version is missing peas.
Michaela
Hi Richa,
will the book be available in german – as a german translation?
Richa
yes, i dont know when though. i’ll check with the publisher and update
Anna Beatriz Zanine Koslinski
Hello, I would love to have your book, is there any digital version (e-book)? Can you pass me the link? Ah, I’m going to India next year and would love to study vegetarian cooking there, could you suggest me any school? Thank you so much.
Richa
yes, the book is available in eook format for the kindlke app, nook app, itunes and other places.
See the kindle version on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1941252095/vegric-20
It depends on the city. All cities and states have their own cuisine and cooking schools.
lynette
Hi Richa
I’ve just order your lovely looking book via amazon (I live in SA). Please could you let me know if there are any particular spices that I should order too? I have some basics, but for instance smoked paprika (just an example) is not widely available in my town, so I wanted to ensure that I have the necessary indian spices when I receive me book!
Richa
Awesome! Thank you for buying the book! The book has a chapter listing the pantry. There is also an Indian pantry list on the blog here https://www.veganricha.com/2012/01/indian-pantry.html
Chinmayi Patel
Hi, I just recently bought your cookbook from amazon. Although I haven’t yet tried a recipe, they look amazing and I’m glad I came across it.
The only question I have is where is the nutritional information? The recipes state the # of servings, but no info on the standard nutritional stats per serving (fat, calories, protein, carbs, etc)?
Could you maybe publish a list/document on your blog that lists the nutritional information for each of the recipes?
Richa
Thank you for buying the book! It took more than an year for the book, with nutritional info it would be another 6 months 🙂 You can plug in the recipe into online calorie counters for an estimate.
Eveliene
What a beautiful book, and wants it to purchase. My question is he comes in from Dutch? My English is not so good for cooking.
Richa
it is currently only in english. If there is interest by dutch publishers, then the book can be translated.
Hilde Broeckx
It’s my birthday next month, I’m gonna let people know this might be a fabulous present =)
Good luck with your book!
Linda Trzybinski
I am so excited for you! I love your recipes and have shared the news of your book publication and the wonders of your blog on Facebook. I am sincerely hoping that I win one of the free giveaways as finances are very tight and I can’t afford to buy your book. I so appreciate your emailing me your blog!!!!! I wish you much success and you deserve it!
catherine
Have pre-ordered the book last year, cannot wait until I receive it.
Satya (Suzanne)
Hi Richa!
I have been cooking so many of your recipes, I am vegetarian and have lots of vegetarian/vegan and gluten intolerant friends, and, I LOVE to cook. Your recipes are amazing, thank you so very much!!
I just ordered your book, despite the fact that I had promised myself not to buy any more cookbooks – and I stuck to it for years, until your talent came into my life :-))
Congratulations on your accomplishment, I am very happy for you! If there is a way you could sign my copy I would love it, but don’t worry if that’s not possible.
With much kindness, from my kitchen to yours,
Satya
Richa
Thank you so much for breaking the promise 🙂 I am not sure how I can sign it. I might have book signing event in Seattle. I should probably create signed stick ons or something 🙂
