Jamaican Jerk Jackfruit Caribbean Black Bean Mango Wraps. These Burritos are packed with hot shredded jerk jackfruit, black beans, mango and cucumbers. Serve as wraps or make a sandwich or bowl. Vegan Soy-free Recipe. Can be gluten-free. Pin this post. Jump to Recipe
You know whats amazing, loads of flavor with not much effort. These wraps filled with spiced jackfruit and beans have a load of flavor and can be served up any which way. Make just the Jamaican jerk jackfruit and fill up sandwiches or a grilled quesadilla with greens or onions and vegan cheddar (I use daiya cheddar slices), make the beans and some rice and fill up a bowl and top with chopped mango or other fruit. Or wrap everything up for all the flavors together.
The Jackfruit is amply spiced with homemade Jamaican jerk seasoning. The Caribbean black beans are simple beans with onion garlic and some orange juice. Use any crunchy veggies, greens and sweet fruits and fill up tacos or wraps. Try Jackfruit also in my Easy Jackfruit Curry or Chipotle Garlic Jackfruit Tacos. I use young green jackfruit. Young Jackfruit is available in canned, fresh or frozen form in Indian or Asian Stores. It is available canned online on stores like amazon.com. Be sure to get young jackfruit in water or brine. Ripe jackfruit is too sweet and is generally used as dessert or served directly as fruit. Add it to your chia pudding or oatmeal if you get the ripe jackfruit accidentally.

- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tsp parsley
- ½ tsp salt
- 1.5 tsp paprika
- ½ to ¾ tsp cayenne
- ¼ to ½ tsp black pepper
- a good dash of cinnamon, nutmeg and all spice.
- 2 tsp or more lime juice
- 1.5 cups (354.88 ml) water
- ¼ to ½ tsp sugar or other sweetener
Caribbean Black Beans:
- 1 tsp oil
- ½ cup (80 g) chopped onion
- 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped
- 1 15 oz (425 g) can black beans or 1.5 cups cooked
- ¼ tsp (0.25 tsp) all spice
- ½ tsp (0.5 tsp) thyme
- ¼ tsp (0.25 tsp) cayenne
- ½ tsp (0.5 tsp) salt or to taste, depends on the beans

- ¼ cup (62.5 ml) water
Other additions:
- Chopped mango
- sliced cucumbers or pickles
- cilantro or baby greens
- salt pepper, lemon or lime juice
- large tortilla wraps
Instructions
Jamaican jerk Jackfruit:
- Drain the jackfruit and wash well. Squeeze out the liquid really well by pressing the jackfruit pieces in a paper napkin. Shred in a food processor or thinly slice using a knife. (For more flavor, toss the shredded jackfruit in the spices, herbs, lime juice and marinate in the fridge for an hour or overnight. then cook with water)
- Heat 1 tsp oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add shredded jackfruit and all dry spices (or 1.5 tbsp or more premade jamaican jerk seasoning) . Cook for 2-3 mins or until the spices start to smell roasted.
- Add lime juice and water and sugar and cook partially covered for 25 to 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Once the mixture is dry, taste and adjust salt and heat. Add in the 1 tsp oil and continue to roast the jackfruit until golden brown on some edges. Serve this in wraps, sandwiches, tacos, nachos.
Make the Caribbean black beans:
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and cook until translucent. 4-5 mins.
- Add black beans, spices, water and orange or lime juice and simmer for 10 mins. Stir occasionally.
Make the wraps:
- Layer the black beans, then cilantro or chopped baby green, then a good helping of the jerk jackfruit, then cucumber and mango, lemon, salt and pepper. Fold into a burrito and serve.

I used the Pampered Chef Jamaican jerk seasoning instead of individual seasonings, a bag of frozen jack fruit. It was really good and flavorful.

yay – thank you!

Hi Richa, I was a little concerned by some of the reviews that suggested that this recipe might not be as flavoursome as I would like but I’m pleased to reassure anyone else that this is out of this world delicious ! 🙂I followed the instructions exactly except one thing which is to not cook the jackfruit in water. I cooked it dry adding a small amount of water every now and again to stop it sticking to the pan. This is hands down the best jackfruit recipe I’ve ever made. Thank you for another 5* recipe which will be on rotation in my family! 🙏🏼😃

yay!! thank you so much for this review – I appreciate it!
Danielle
Can I freeze the jackfruit after it’s cooked? I’ve this once before and loved the spices and textures! I want to double it this time and freeze the leftovers 🙂
Jen
Followed instructions but needed a lot of improvement – so much so that I triple checked the ingredients list to make sure I didn’t make an error. The flavour was very weak despite fully draining the jackfruit & marinating it overnight. I’ve made similar recipes before and I realize that it’s missing was something more than dried seasoning! I added tomato paste, garlic and fried onion which hugely helped (& other recipes for jerk jackfruit tend to call for). This helped hugely, as the final product of the original recipe was just very bland, like seasoned water with chunky bits in it. Needs a lot more oomph as jackfruit is very bland.
Richa
The jackfruit gets cooked in that broth and it has to completely dry up so all the spice is then concentrated on the jackfruit. I am Glad you could adjust it to your preference

A great recipe! I used premade jerk seasoning which made it quick and easy, and the flavour was really nice. It went down really well tonight and my family have already asked for it to go on the list for next week. Thank you 😊

Awesome!! Do leave a rating too!

I was so excited to try this recipe because I love Jamaican Jerk, but this did not come together as I was hoping. It had a ton of spice, but no flavor, which is unfortunate. I have a lot of leftovers so I need to figure out how to revamp these so I don’t waste all of my food.
Richa
Hmm if there’s so much spice there should be flavor. Maybe it just needs additional salt?
Nicole
My new favorite jackfruit recipe! Perfect heat and flavor. Super easy to make. Thank you! 🙂
Vegan Richa Support
Awesome !!
Ben
Was not clear on the directions. If you marinate this do you just cook it in water?
Shannon
Can you tell me how to cook the jackfruit if it’s fresh? I couldn’t find canned jackfruit in town in MT today.
Vegan Richa Support
no problem – simply boil the jackfruit chunks for 45 minutes or until the inner flesh is soft and a bit stringy, like chicken. If you have a pressure cooker, 10 minutes is usually enough. When the jackfruit is cooked, peel off the skin to reveal the seeds and pods surrounding the seeds.

This is delicious! Love these tacos!!!

who doesn’t??!!

Wonderful recipe! I found it a bit to spicy for me but that is an easy fix and has to do with personal taste. Next time I will just cut the cayenne.
Vegan Richa Support
I’m so glad you enjoyed this! Sometimes it’s tough to gauge the personal spice level on the first try, that’s for sure! 🙂
Jacki
Can I use jackfruit that was frozen ? If so do I need to change anything?
Vegan Richa Support
yes, absolutely ! Cook the shredded jackfruit in jamaican jerk seasoning and broth, then continue to roast to dry them up a bit.
Elizabeth
DELICIOUS! So much flavor… so easy. We served them with oven fried sweet potatoes. Thank you for this recipe… I know we will be coming back to it often.
Lynn
Omg, so delicious- my first attempt at jackfruit too!
Abi
Just made this and my husband and I loved it. Thanks for the recipe!
Richa
yay
Ola
These were delicious, thank you for the fabulous recipe.
Josh
How about making it in a slow cooker?
Richa
you can make it, i dont use one so i dont know the times
Kathlee n
How would you cook it differently if using soy curls? Thanks!!
Richa
soak the soycurls in hot water for 10 mins, then drain and shred and follow the recipe.
Daisy
Thank you.
Daisy
It is more than I can eat. I bought half cut fruit. I guess I cant use the ripe one to make anything so I will freeze it.
Richa
puree it and use it instead of mango in vegan mango cheesecake, or cupcakes (i have a cupcake recipe), or add to chia puddings, donuts etc
Daisy
Do you have any recipes using fresh ripe jackfruit? I bought some and want to make something.
Richa
you can eat it like a fruit or use it in place of mango in certain recipes
Miz
Just FYI, you might want to be careful labelling it “jerk” as in carribbean culture it involved the marination of the main ingredient in jerk spice, only saying cause Jamie Oliver got a lot of schtick for it, great recipe though!
Richa
Thank you for letting me know. When i was naming the recipe I was going to use jamaican jerk spice seasoned or something like that but the search term on google(what people are searching for) was jamaican jerk jackfruit. Marinating the jackfruit is going to be better anyway,so i should note that.
Lisette
I’m in love with all your Indian recipes but today I made this Jamaican one. I changed it up a bit: subbed the jackfruit for mock chicken and the black beans for cauliflower, but it still was great. No leftovers today 😃! Thanks again Richa for the delicious recipes! ❤️
Richa
yay!

My husband and I absolutely loved these! Everything worked so well together; they were spicy, sweet (mango) , salty, crunchy (cucumber), and chewy (tortilla). Thanks Richa!
Richa
thats awesome!
Jessica
This is amazing! Very spicy though so cut waayyyyy back on the heat the second time I made it. Definitely a repeat recipe in our house!
Richa
Awesome! yes adjust the heat (cayenne, black pepepr, paprika etc) to taste
Katie Goad
Loved this easy recipe!
I was trying to throw something together last minute for dinner and had everything on hand. Took no time at all, was super easy, and delicious.
Thanks!
Heather
Why is this 765 calories? I’ve decided to edit the recipe to decrease the calories. Thx!
Richa
Corrected it. The widget sometimes picks up different default values. It was picking up dried black beans, 1.5 cups of them that would actually make about 4 cups cooked while the recipe is using 1.5 cups cooked
Bill
Wow. Just wow. I made this for supper tonight. Amazing. So excited to see a jerk jackfruit recipe. I subbed avocado for mango (couldn’t find fresh) and added baby spinach to the wrap. This is killer. Love the deep flavors of spice and citrus.
THANK YOU!
Richa
Awesome!!
DJ
I️ felt that 2 c water was a lot of water! How would it work to just add 1 c water?
Richa
it would work just fine. I like to simmer the jackfruit for longer for it to pick up flavor. the cooking time also depends on your pan and stove
Selma
I made this last night and it was delicious! The sweet mango combined with the spicy jackfruit and beans was a match made in heaven. The amount of water was a bit too much though, it took me a full hour for the jackfruit to cook dry and get some browned edges.
Richa
thats odd, did you squeeze the jackfruit and discard all the liquid?
Selma
Yes I did. But I doubled the recipe. I used 2 cans of jackfruit and 4 cups of water in 1 skillet (without lid), so maybe there wasn’t enough surface to steam off?
Richa
I would do 2.5 to 3 cups water and it will take longer. Cook at a higher heat.
Dan
I made this for dinner tonight, and I have to admit…I think this is the best meal I have cooked in my two years of being vegan. Absolutely delicious! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Sharon
Where can I find jack fruit in Australia? Any help would be very much appreciated. TIA
Richa
You should be able to find it in asian, thai, Indonesian, Indian stores.
Kate
Could you sub hearts of palm for jackfruit? I have only been able to find hearts of palm, but haven’t used it yet. Can not wait to try this!
Richa
Yes. Wash them well, squeeze out the brine and use.
Lee @ Veggie Quest
This looks great! I love that you paired black beans with the jackfruit to amp up the whole-food, plant-based protein. I also like your tip of squeezing the liquid out of the jackfruit before cooking. I’ve failed to do that step before, and the texture of the jackfruit came out all wrong. Pinning this to try later!

If you really, really can’t find any form of gluten free wrap where you live, I can recommend making your own corn tortillas.
You can buy masa harina (corn flour) online, and then all you need is water (use 4 parts flour to 3 of water by volume) half an hour to rest the dough, covered, and a ziplock bag. Cut the seams of the ziplock so only one side is joined. Open it up. Pop a golfball sized amount of dough on the middle of one half, fold over and cover with the other, use the bottom of a heavy pan to press it into a tortilla. Take it off the plastic, put it on a preheated medium hot nonstick frying pan or griddle. Turn when the first side is cooked. Press the next while you’re waiting. Home made tortillas!
Or – leaves. I like chard or collard leaves, but I can’t buy collards at all where I live.
Richa – do you mean 1 tsp of onion flakes, or literally one teaspoon of onion? 🙂
Richa
onion powder
suzi
for gluten free wraps you can make ( so easy) your own with cassava flour 🙂
Wild Nettle
I have to try 🙂
Tina
Would love to try this, but how can it be gluten-free?
Richa
use gluten-free wraps. the filling is gluten-free.
Tina
There are no gluten-free wraps where I live. I had hoped for another alternative you might have…
sarah
You can wrap in anything… cabbage leaves, lettuce leaves, maybe.
Richa
as Sarah said. Use anything as wrap or tacos like lettuce leaves. I have a gf flatbread on the blog that can be used as well. https://www.veganricha.com/2015/10/yeast-free-sweet-potato-vegan-gluten-free-flatbread.html
I am not sure where you are, but i have found lots of gf wrap options in stores made with rice flour etc.

Use spelt flour 1-1 for wheat flour in any tortilla recipe. Tastes even better and is way healthier for you!
Joe
Can’t reply to Ryan directly, but do not use spelt if you have a gluten intolerance. It’s a species of wheat and, as such, contains gluten. If you don’t have any issues with gluten, however, go for it
nicolas
try Arepas, they’re made with cornflour
Tom
corn soft taco shells?
Cassie
What I love about jackfruit is that it’s sweet but it adapts to anything you add to it! I’ve tried BBQ jackfruit products before and the flavor of jackfruit is incredible! I would love to try the jackfruit black bean filling recipe and possibly top it on a salad or a burrito bowl!

Omg, I was so happy when I saw this recipe in my feed. These look amazing and I love the Carribbean flavors! Can’t wait to try this one 🙂
